Artist Bio: Ann M. Shedelbower maintains her studio near downtown Hot Spring, in the very heart of the art community. She has lived in Hot Springs for over seven years and works at Gentiva Health Services. Ann received her bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University and her master's degree from Pittsburg State University in Kansas. In 2004, she successfully completed the Chamber of Commerce Leadership Hot Springs program.

The Arts Cooperative Team (ACT) and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children of Garland County are two organizations where Ms. Shedelbower is currently serving as a board member. She also enjoys volunteering her time at the Charitable Christian Medical Clinic.

Some time ago, Ann discovered Sumi-e painting, and fell in love with the simplicity of design and time-honored technique inherent to this medium. Sumi-e, the traditional black ink art of Japan, strives to capture the essence of the subject with minimal strokes of the brush, fusing the perception of the artist's eye with traditional technique to create art stunning in its power yet astoundingly simple at its core. Ann also works in watercolor, delighting in the unruly fluidity and transparency of color innate to this medium.

Ms. Shedelbower studied Sumi-e under Rita Bohm of Berlin, Germany, herself a disciple of Master Massao Okinaka of Japan. Watercolor inspiration and instruction have been received from Richard Stephens, and Florence Davis and Stan Rames of the Artists Workshop Gallery.

Ann has exhibited her work in numerous venues, including the Woodlands in Hot Springs Village, the 2002 Hot Springs Annual Wine, Food, and Art Extravaganza, Mid-Southern Watercolor Society's Annual exhibit at the Cantrell Gallery, and the Komen Foundation "Art of Caring" Annual Fundraiser, the last two as a member of the Mid-Southern Watercolor Society in Little Rock.

She has designed artwork for bath, body and spa products for The Alchemy Shoppe, located in downtown Hot Springs. Her work can be seen in The Real Estate Company. Commissioned works for individuals include homes in Texas, Missouri, Minnesota, and Virginia. Community contributions include donations of art to the annual Alzheimer's Art to Remember fundraiser, Parkinson's Disease fundraiser, ACT' Artrageous, and demonstration and teaching for Lake Hamilton High School and Day Springs' Children's program.

Artist Interpretation: "Inspired by the weeping willow, as it so gently moves with the breeze...what more pleasant a space than sitting quietly in such a chair, grass at your feet, and the moon rising?"
