Artist Bio: As a
native Arkansan, Deborah's early sensibilities were shaped by the
natural beauty of the central river valley and lakes of the Ouachita
mountains. Later in life, without formal artistic training, she
found a way to think about color by means of grounding in Goethean
observation and color theory.
Through studies in drawing and veiled
watercolor painting with California artists Ken Goldman and Jan
Boss, she has gradually been able to bring the laws of light, darkness
and color formation to her artistic projects. Following work with
lazure artist Robert Longsdon, she employs the same understanding
to create delicate veils of transparent color on large interior
wall spaces.
A psychotherapist by training, she also uses clay modeling
and watercolor to help with the exploration of life-story patterns
through the seven year cycles.
Artist Interpretation:
"By whatever humble means, I aspire artistically, through a
particular vision of the commonplace, to open a doorway, for myself
and others, into the impalpable mysteries of nature. It has been
my experience that in moments of tranquility stolen from an often
hectic life, the contemplation of things most ordinary and familiar
to us can lead toward a magical environment, one that is barely
visible to the hurried passersby.
"A simple wooden chair, for instance,
invites us to pause for a moment-relax, alter our gaze-and, from
the comfort of its resting place, to see what surrounds us as something
entirely new.
"As the poet Novalis so beautifully stated from his
18th century vantage point, 'By giving the commonplace a higher
meaning, the familiar an enigmatic look, the known the prestige of
the unknown, the finite the appearance of the infinite-I make it
Romantic."
